QED Haematology Ltd and QED Transfusion Ltd facilitate the provision of samples to laboratories for external quality assessment (EQA) of  Haematology and blood transfusion laboratories. The testing performed on these EQA samples includes automated cell counting, crossmatching of blood and testing for haemoglobinopathies and other inherited red cell disorders and a wide range of other tests.

Overview

There was a requirement to relocate the services supported by QED Haematology Ltd and QED Transfusion Ltd, as their previous location was earmarked for redevelopment. The specialist nature of the service meant that there were very specific design requirements. Fresh Workspace were awarded the contract to design and fit out a light industrial unit creating a specialist state of the art laboratory with Cold Store and a dedicated packaging and despatch area on the ground floor.  The first floor contained offices, tea point and workstations to accommodate scientists and support staff

The existing central heating system and associated radiators were removed and new Air Conditioning throughout along with a new Fresh Air Heat Recovery Unit to serve the laboratory was installed.  The electrical services were upgraded, the existing lighting was replaced with new LED panels and new Cat6 data was distributed throughout the building terminating in the new first floor Comms Room.

The existing WC’s were fully refurbished along with a new DDA WC. The addition of a dedicated DDA compliant lift was installed within the design creating a fully DDA compliant workspace for the staff.

New furniture was specified and installed throughout including specialist bespoke laboratory furniture.

The works were carried out during the restrictions imposed by the COVID pandemic and were completed on time and to budget.
